How to prepare English Language for bank exams?

Hello everyone, today I am going to tell you how to prepare for the English language for any type of bank exam. Many candidates who are not from English background find it difficult to prepare for English language. No language can be memorized like a mathematics formula, we can only understand the rules. The more you read, the better it is.

The strategy that I am sharing with you is for all types of candidates whether they are beginners or such candidates whose score is less in English.

Let's break our preparation in step-by-step approach. English is divided into 2 parts,

1) Grammar :- For grammar you have to learn all the grammar rules from paramount book by Neetu singh. After completing this book you will practice from sp bakshi's book. After practicing from these two books, you will remember the rules of grammar very well. Grammar rules helps you to solve most of the questions in exam.

2) Vocabulary :- For vocab you need to read newspaper The Hindu or The Economic times or The Indian express as per your interest or availability. You can also read them online. You don't need to read the whole newspaper. Read only what is important such as news related to banks, editorial, business, economics, finance, sports. You can skip news related to politics, movies, personal comments, etc. The habit of reading newspaper helps you a lot in solving reading comprehensions.

Syllabus of English for prelims and mains is same, the only difference is the number of questions and the level of difficulty. In prelims 35 questions are asked for 35 marks which you have to do in 20 minutes and in mains exam you get 35 questions of 40 marks which you have to do in 40 minutes.

The chapters that comes in English are

1) Reading comprehension :- 2 types of reading comprehension are asked in bank exams, first is story based and second is factual based. I will tell you some tips and tricks through which you can easily ace this topic.

(i) Skim through the passage first with no intention of finding the answer. Just get a basic idea of what the question is talking about.

(ii) Read all the questions carefully and mark the main point of each question which you have to search in the given reading comprehension.

(iii) Again skim the passage but this time you have to do it carefully with a intention of finding the answer.

(iv) You only choose that option which is directly given in the passage. No assumptions should be made by you.

(v) There are 2 or 3 questions based on vocab. You can easily solve them because you have read the passage very well.

2) Error detection :- This topic fully depends on grammar rules and for grammar rule, first you have to read the paramount book, then practice from sp bakshi book.

3) Word swap :- For this topic you must understand the sentence. In this topic the position of some words of a sentence is changed and you have to put those words in the right position.

4) Match the column :- This topic is same which we have been studying since school time. There are 2 columns with 3 or 4 sentences each and you have to match the sentences which forms a correct single sentence. This topic is based on grammar rules because we have to match or add words, clauses and
phrases of the half sentences given in the columns.

5) Sentence improvement :- Sentence improvement includes phrase replacement and sentence correction. In this topic you are given a sentence in which a phrase or tense or parts of speech is highlighted, you have to choose the correct form of that phrase or tense or parts of speech. Here rules of grammar plays an important role.

6) Cloze test :- Cloze test can be solved in 2 ways, first by skimming the passage you can choose the word which should come in that blank, second with the help of parts of speech you can find out whether the blank will come in a verb or a noun or an adjective or an adverb. Second method helps you to eliminate options.

7) Fill in the blanks :- This topic is same as cloze test.

8) Para jumbles :- Para jumbles are of 2 types, first in which a single sentence is given in jumbled form and in other you have given 4 or 5 sentences in a jumbled form. First type is easy you can easily solve them with the help of options but for the second one you need to practice a lot of questions. Because if your arrangement is wrong then your whole question can be wrong.

9) Idiom and phrases :- This topic can easily be covered by sp bakshi book and paramount book. You just have to revise this chapter daily.

Now your concept of all the chapters are clear. What will you do now? Now you will solve mock tests

For prelims exam you can totally rely on bankersadda and practice mock sectional test.
For mains exam you only need to solve oliveboard mock tests.

The more you practice, the better you get. After a long time of practicing, our work will become natural, skillful, swift and steady.
